30' Haida Canoe by Stormy Hamar
In 2018, HCRG founder Stormy Hamar received a Rasmuson Individual Artist Award. He was able to purchase a log and a few tools with the grant, and began carving his largest Haida canoe yet - a 30' red cedar dugout. Stormy was the sole carver on this project and the canoe took several years to fully complete. Throughout the process, it became an important educational tool for Kasaan's museum, shared with over a thousand visitors over the years. It comfortably seats around 10 paddlers, and is outfitted with sailing capabilities. Since its completion in the Spring of 2024, it was used to take Kasaan people and friends on a 300-mile journey to a regional native gathering called "Celebration" in Juneau.
